Dear Parents and Carers of Good Samaritan,
Last week I was able to reflect on my principalship of Good Samaritan with the appraisal process that took place over the last couple of weeks.
I am deeply grateful to all those parents who were able to offer feedback via the survey or phone calls. I am humbled by the comments made by the students of Good Samaritan when members of the panel spoke to them. Whilst I acknowledge that I may influence the culture of Good Samaritan, it is truly the community - staff, parents and students - who make a school the place it is.
Our Good Samaritan community can strongly align the 5 core values of St Benedict with the way in which we engage with each other each day. St Benedict talks about community as being a place where all share the responsibility to create and support community; a place that creates a climate which promotes a sense of community while valuing the uniqueness of the individual and a manifestation of an ability to adapt to circumstances without compromising our values.
This week, I was able to show a family through our school as they decided upon enrolling their child into Good Samaritan. I am so proud of the responses that I receive from the children about our school. They freely say things like: ‘You always have a friend at Good Samaritan’; ‘We include everyone at Good Samaritan’; ‘Our teachers care about us and our learning’; ‘We get to do lots of things together at Good Samaritan.’
Sometimes, as adults, we underestimate the importance of community to children. As I was writing the newsletter this week I received an email from a parent who wanted me to know how our Year 5 boys demonstrated a terrific act of friendship, kindness and prayer. Community prayer for children comes in many forms, and with these boys it came in the form of remembering a very unwell friend who previously attended Good Samaritan.
At the Touch Football Gala Day the boys made the decision to play for their unwell friend, Valentino, who is currently receiving treatment for leukemia in Brisbane. Although Valentino hasn’t been at school with the boys for the last couple of years, they know how important it is to be ‘in communion, in community’ with him.
This is what we strive for our Good Samaritan boys and girls to be - people of compassion, people of community and people of faith, hope and love.
Until next week, as we journey together, with Jesus,
Toni Sillis
Principal
PDHPE
Starting last week, the newsletter will provide information about what each grade are learning in their Personal Development and Health lessons each week. This will include a question for parents to use to engage in discussion with their child/ren.
We hope this information allows you the opportunity to discuss the content and activities that are covered in these weekly lessons. We have a shared responsibility to keep our children safe, cared for and help them to experience a life that is full and inclusive of respectful, caring relationships now and in the future.
Session 3
Kindergarten and Amaroo Gold are learning to identify and use correct names for body parts, including the male and female anatomy. Question to discuss with children: What are the names of the parts of your body that are private? |
Year 1 are learning to recognise their own emotions so that they can respond to different situations in a positive way. Question to discuss with children: What are some emotions that you feel at different times and how does your body feel when you have these emotions? |
Year 2 are learning to identify parts of their skeletal system so that they can understand how their body works. Question to discuss with children: Keeping bones strong requires eating calcium-rich foods like dairy products, broccoli, and some fish. Exercise, especially weight-bearing exercise, helps keep bones strong, too. What do we do to keep our bones strong? |
Year 3 are learning to identify their internal organs so that they can understand how their body works. Question to discuss with children: Why do we have internal organs? Has anyone in our family had an operation on an internal organ? |
Year 4 are learning to identify roles, rights and responsibilities in different relationships. Question to discuss with children: What could you do if you were in a challenging situation and who could you go to for support? |
Year 5 and Amaroo Blue are learning to identify physical changes that happen during puberty so that we can understand ourselves better during our own experience. Question to discuss with children: What are some changes that will occur during puberty? |
Year 6 are learning about the reproductive system so that we can understand the process of creating babies in a healthy life-giving relationship. Discuss with children: What were some of your own personal experiences during puberty? |
Science Week:
Next Tuesday, 16 August Good Samaritan will celebrate Science Week. The Year Six students will be hosting a mini science Fair and are going to be scientists for the day. In groups they will be planning, desigining and demonstrating a range of science experiments for students in all grades. Students will explain the scientific process of each experiment and engage students in problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Mass with Bishop Brian
We celebrated the Dedication of SJV Co Cathedral and the feasts of St John Vianney and St Mary of the Cross Mackillop on August 5, 2022. The students’ singing was exceptional, as was their participation in the mass. Bishop Brian Mascord was very impressed with all students, especially our younger students and their ability to sit for a long period of time. We are very proud indeed!

News from Year One
All Year 1 students have started Term 3 ready to learn!
In Religious Education the students have been reading the parable of The Treasure and The Pearl, and learning about Saint John Vianney and Saint Mary McKillop of the Cross. A special Mass was celebrated last week to remember these two special saints.
In English, the students are reading a variety of contemporary Aboriginal stories. The stories read and viewed so far are Tiddalick, Somebody’s Land by A. Goodes, You & Me Our Place by L. Norrington and Tom Tom by R. Sullivan. We are writing recounts, literary recounts, descriptions and stating our opinions.
In Mathematics, the students have been learning about skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, equal groups, lots of and position.
In Geography, the students are learning about Australia. They are investigating where Australia is located on a world map and they are observing that Australia is both a continent and island surrounded by ocean.
In Science and Technology, the focus is Change, both on the land and in the sky. The students are identifying if these changes are natural or if these changes are a result of human intervention.
As our play area is being upgraded with artificial turf, the students have been able to observe change due to human intervention. They are really looking forward to this area being ready for play, especially a good game of soccer!
The students are all looking forward to learning more with their friends.
Year 1 had a fantastic day celebrating Grandparents/Great people day in week 1. It was beautiful to see the students interact and enjoy quality time together with their special person.
Year 1 were so proud to have their special people join them at liturgy and share a variety of activities within their classrooms.
News from Year 2 Classrooms
Year Two students have been busy in English this term learning about informative texts that have focused on Australian landmarks. We have been learning how to read and gather information and we have learnt how to navigate features of a non fiction text. Some features that we have become familiar with are: using an index, contents page, glossary and learning many interesting topics and technical words connected to an Australian landmark.
We have also learnt how to research information about a chosen topic and we have learnt about the structure that is needed to write an information report. We have become familiar with many amazing natural landmarks in Australia, such as The Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, The Blue Mountains and Kakadu National Park. We have learnt many interesting features, facts and technical words about these landmarks and we have located information from a variety of sources.
Our photographs below show examples of students' fact files about The Great Barrier Reef. These include key features, interesting facts and vocabulary associated with this landmark. We have also sketched an underwater scene of The Great Barrier Reef, featuring many species of animals and plants. We coloured the illustrations with crayon and washed over the images with watercolour paint. Students have created amazing underwater portraits of The Great Barrier Reef.

Year Two has also been learning about places within our local community and we have learnt how to describe the position of objects on maps. Students have written interesting facts and created fantastic portraits of the Wollongong Harbour and Lighthouse.
Here are some photos of showing our learning about multiplication and division in Mathematics

Touch Football Gala Day
Yesterday for the first time in a long time the students from Stages Two and Three were able to participate in a gala day, a day just for fun, where the scores don’t matter and the aim of the day is to potentially try something new, meet new friends from other schools and to have fun. Despite a wet and chilly day, a great day was had by all and the best way to keep warm was to keep moving!
There was a huge amount of interest in participating in the gala day but due to the clash with the Diocesan Athletics Carnival unfortunately not all could attend but we still entered nine teams which is an amazing effort. On the day there were some wonderful examples of teamwork, mateship, athleticism and for some a potential new summer sport.
The students all should be very proud of themselves and it was great to hear all of the words and cheers of support. It was also great to see some of our more experienced teams adjust their playing style when playing less experienced teams so that everyone enjoyed the game. As mentioned by Mrs Sillis, one team was playing for their friend and had his name written on the tape on their boots.
Thank you to the parents who assisted and supported on the day.
