Dear Parents and Carers of Good Samaritan,
This year we celebrate 10 years as Good Samaritan Catholic Primary School. This significant event will be celebrated with an Anniversary Mass on Wednesday 14 September. This day will include a range of anniversary celebrations for Good Samaritan students.
In addition, a 10 Year Gala Dinner event is being planned for Friday 16 September. This event is for adults only and will take place at The Fraternity Club. Further details will be forthcoming early in Term 3.
In order for the night to be a success, and to raise funds for our school, the Good Samaritan P&F are calling for sponsorship from local businesses, families and friends of the school who are able to support the 10 year event.
All sponsorship is greatly appreciated, and Products or Services or Vouchers will also be gratefully accepted to the sponsorship value. These items will go towards a main raffle, Lucky Door Prizes and other prizes throughout the evening.

Industrial Action: Tomorrow Thursday 30 June
Industrial Action: Tomorrow Thursday 30 June
The Independent Education Union (IEU) has informed Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong that their members will engage in protected industrial action tomorrow, 30 June 2022, for the entire school day.
What this means for you and your child on Thursday 30 June 2022
- Good Samaritan will be non-operational due to the protected stop work meeting.
- Any absence from school on this day will not impact your child's attendance record.
As a Catholic employer, we respect the rights of employees to be members of the union and take protected industrial action and we will endeavour to continue in good faith to bargain with the union and reach agreement. We recognise this event may present challenges for school families and we are committed to doing all we can to minimise disruption for your child.
Please contact the school if you require further information.
Respectful Relationships, Child Safety, Growth, Development & Human Sexuality Education
As we continue to support children to understand their world, their relationships and themselves it is important that we support you as the first educators of your children. As the children grow and change in the world today, it is also important to acknowledge the information we now have on Child Safety education. This means that children come to understand, value and experience a life that is full and inclusive of respectful and caring relationships now and into the future.
To support this we are implementing the new PDHPE syllabus which mandates teachers to take into consideration the local context students are growing up in, the strengths students bring to the classroom and school playground and how students interact with one another in an informed age appropriate way.
A Zoom meeting, Respectful Relationships, Child Safety, Growth, Development & Human Sexuality Education, will be held on Tuesday 19 July from 7pm-8pm.
This meeting is for all parents - Kindergarten to Year 6.
This is a significant change in the culture of our school community. Changing culture is about schools, parents/carers and communities being on the same page and being counter-cultural to the narrative currently being displayed to our young people around relationships.
At the meeting we will address the myths around this topic and also be informed by the facts. You will have the opportunity to to hear about the cyclical nature of skill and knowledge development across the areas of respectful relationships, child safety, child growth, development and human sexuality.
You’re invited to join the Respectful Relationships, Child Safety, Growth, Development & Human Sexuality Education Zoom Meeting:

Grandparents and Great People Day:
We look forward to gathering with Grandparents and Great People on Friday 22 July. The day will involve our community gathering for a Liturgy, sharing a morning tea together and celebrating student learning.
To assist with the morning tea we ask that grades bring a plate (slices, cake, biscuits, sandwiches) to share with our visitors.
This Friday 1 July is the GSFM FUN DAY.
All students are invited to wear house colour mufti with appropriate footwear and clothing for sporting activities.
INFANTS K-2 |
PRIMARY 3-6 |
The K-2 Carnival (FUN DAY) will be held in the morning session at Robert Cram Park (over the road) from 9-11am. K-2 parents are invited to attend this carnival and then stay for a picnic morning tea from 11-11:30 with their child/ren on the school grounds. |
Students in Years 3-6 will participate in sporting activities in the middle session on Friday. They are invited to bring a card game or board game to use in the morning session on Friday. No iPads are required on Friday. |
Screen Time and School Holidays:
As the school holidays approach it may be time to relook at the agreements you have with your child about the use of technology at home. Promoting healthy online habits and that includes a balanced use of devices supports children to use digital technologies with confidence. Your routines at home can include device-free times and places in your home.
It is important to remember that devices should always be kept out of children’s bedrooms. The temptation to use the device instead of sleeping is too great for primary school aged children.
You will find further information from the eSafety Commissioner.

Reconciliation and Eucharist Program 2022: Enrolment
Enrolments will occur on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 June at 6.30pm at SJV.
This is a Parish event, not a school event, therefore will not be affected by the industrial action in schools on Thursday.
No late enrolments will be accepted. Please contact Cathy Zamroz (Pastoral Associate) if you have any queries.

Did you know?
Say grace. The practice of pausing at mealtimes to give thanks to God is a way of acknowledging the divine source of all our life-sustaining gifts. As many a family will attest, this brief prayerful interaction with God and with one another is a sure way of strengthening the bond of faith in a household.
Kindergarten students have been very busy bees this term. In literacy, we are continuing to learn the alphabet code through our letters and sounds practise and reading some wonderful books by Nick Bland and Alison Lester to help us understand the value of rich settings and characters in stories. Year three came to visit us and share their narrative stories, a great chance for Kinder to see where they will be in a few short years with their writing skills!
We have created our own mini investigative worlds, exploring rock pools and animals that camouflage. In maths we have been exploring musical and object patterns, properties of addition, as well as learning our teen numbers to 20 with LOTS of hands-on activities and discussions every day.
Talk time has been a favourite time of day for the children as they share some of the things that are important to their family with their peers. It’s a wonderful time for the children to learn more about one another and develop some very important communication skills. It has integrated well with our Religion unit of belonging to God’s family and being a valued member of a wider GSFM family.
Of course, one of the main highlights has been rehearing for our amazing school musical, The Litter Muncher! Creating our very own costumes, reading our lines, learning moves AND singing has been a massive accomplishment and kinder would like to give a HUGE thank you to our wonderful creative arts teacher, Mrs McCabe…the children will miss you!

Amaroo Gold
We have had lots of fun learning experiences in Amaroo Gold this term!
In English, we have focused on fairy tales and have really enjoyed reading these stories, including The Gingerbread Man and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We had fun imagining what we would do in different situations but all agreed we would never enter a stranger’s house and eat their porridge!
In Mathematics, Amaroo Gold have worked on a variety of topics. We have had lots of practice with addition and subtraction and can use a variety of strategies to solve problems. We are also looking at fractions and can share an object by dividing it into two equal parts. Amaroo Gold know that halves are two equal parts - they must be the same.
Amaroo Gold have enjoyed our Schoolyard Safari topic in Science, as it has meant lots of exploring in the gardens. We have found lots of creepy crawlies and learned many interesting things about earthworms, snails and ants. Amaroo Gold students all remembered to stay respectful by not touching any animals we found.
In Personal Development and Health lessons, we have been learning about how the food pyramid can help us with healthy eating. We know all about the food groups and have identified foods that belong in each of the groups. As part of this learning, we have done lots of cooking! We made yummy carrot muffins for our vegetable focus and used rice bubbles to make chocolate crackles when we learned about grains. We have also tasted lots of fruits and vegetables and were very brave at trying new foods.
In History, we have been learning about how family life has changed from the past to the present, and how families around the world are both the same and different to ours. We enjoyed looking at toys from the past, especially when the jack-in-the-box gave us a fright!
We have also been fascinated as we discovered more about our church in Religious Education. We had several visits to explore the church and some of its key items, such as the altar, lectern, tabernacle and cross. How lucky we are to be at Good Samaritan!

Amaroo Blue
Term 3 has been very busy with many wonderful learning experiences.
Our Mathematics units have been investigating the properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects.
In Science, we have been completing our research about Australian animals and focusing on their adaptations to living in their environment.
We are learning many skills during our cooking sessions. Our latest tasty creations have been rice paper rolls and sausage sandwiches.
Athletics Results
It has been a long term of completing Athletics events due to the wet weather and the conditions of the grounds. Last week we wrapped up all of the field events.

Love of Learning
How Can We Show Support in Our Community?
- Let others have a go before jumping in
- Be aware and supportive of those less fortunate.
- Show care for others
- Being resilient and Bouncing Back
- Showing that upstanding is more supportive than bystanding
- Knowing it’s okay to make mistakes
- Using Consistent & Agreed upon practices in our classrooms
- using signals to show the teacher how I’m going with individual independent tasks.
From the School Handbook:
Parents Supporting Student Learning: Replenishing Equipment for the New School Term
As we approach the upcoming holidays parents are asked to ensure that their child’s pencil case and school supplies are replenished. Having everything at their fingertips each day aids in the learning process allowing children to focus on the task at hand rather than worrying about not having the equipment to complete the task.
Uniform Check:
Throughout the holidays please check your child’s uniform is clearly labelled with their name. Also, if your child needs new school shoes or joggers they must be within the uniform requirements i.e: black school shoes and predominately white joggers similar to the images below.
If you have a sibling that will be ready to begin school in 2023 contact the office for an enrolment pack.
The Canteen will be open
WEDNESDAY,THURSDAY and FRIDAY EACH WEEK
PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE (PRC) 2022
PRC is back again. From Monday 21 March, students will be able to borrow any books from their respective challenge group (3-4 or 5-6).
Those students doing the PRC can check in SORA and find one of the Premier's Reading Challenge categories matching the right challenge level. If students are having trouble, they can download the reading log from the PRC website to keep a track of what has been read. We will assist them to enter their data.
Students from Yrs 3-4 need to log 20 titles in which 5 of them are free choices. Yrs 5-6 need to log 20 titles of which 5 are free choices. Students from K-2 will do the Challenge (K-2) as a classroom.
The last day to log PRC titles is 19 August 2022 for students.
