Dear Parents and Caregivers of Good Samaritan,

As we enter the second semester of the school year we take an opportunity to focus on effective classroom management across our school.

Classroom management is a broad term that is used to describe a range of practices and strategies teachers plan and implement in order to build the relationships with their students and between students. These practices and strategies are designed to foster safe, positive and stimulating learning environments.

The most effective classroom management approaches combine preventative and responsive strategies. This is the essence of the Positive Behaviour 4 Learning (PB4L) framework that we implement and maintain at Good Samaritan.

Preventative classroom management strategies create positive environments that support students to engage in learning, be on-task and display positive learning behaviours. At Good Samaritan we describe these as Attitudes and Actions for Learning.

Responsive classroom management strategies aim to positively redirect students to meet classroom expectations and routines when they may show behaviours that impact their own and other students’ learning.

The above figure illustrates the language and sequence that school staff use in order to positively redirect students when behaviour is impacting a lesson or the learning of others. This tool is used to visually support students as they get themselves back on track. The role of the teacher is to always support the student to return to their learning. This may be done by using strategies such as: offering assistance, actively supervising to monitor on-task and off-task behaviours, providing adjustments to the task where necessary and appropriate.

At Good Samaritan we always aim to give corrective feedback to students that is consistent, fair and respectful. Returning to our 3, simple stated, school rules of Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible is also a strategy that students are very familiar with.

This week you might ask your child what it means to ‘Learn with my head and my heart.’

Enjoy the week ahead,

Toni Sillis

Principal

Thank You!

Thank you to all parents who were able to ensure that the children returned to school Ready to Learn. They looked terrific coming into school with their full school uniforms and their replenished equipment in their pencil cases. This can be a huge effort as you work to manage the household as well and for this we are most grateful.

Some of the girls have had acrylic and/or shellac nails over the holiday break. A reminder that these need to be removed during the school term.

             Good Samaritan School Choir performance

11am-12:30pm: Open Classrooms - All guests are invited to attend classrooms to view student work

12:30pm: School Day resumes

Students may leave following Open Classrooms. Parents must ‘sign out’ students with the class teacher. Please note that if students are leaving the premises with someone other than parents or previously nominated adults on our school records, the teacher and/or school office must be advised via an email to info@gsfmdow.catholic.edu.au  or a telephone call to the school office.

School Uniforms:

We have been in conversation with Poppets Uniforms regarding an option for the girls’ Summer uniform.  Below are some images of the option for the girls to wear shorts and a shirt during the Summer months. The girls will still be able to wear the Summer dress. The girls will continue to wear the school unisex ankle socks and black school shoes.

In the coming weeks, some girls from the primary classes will be asked for their feedback on the shorts option. The manikin display will be in the office foyer until Monday 31 July.

Please complete this Google Form to indicate your agreement with the option or any concerns that you may have. The form will close on Monday 31 July.

iPads at School

Students in Years 3-6 are reminded to ensure that their iPad is fully charged each day coming to school. When students’ iPads are not fully charged it becomes very difficult to fully engage in some aspects of their learning.
