News from Kindergarten
Wow, what a start to Kindergarten! It has been an exciting time for all the children as they settle into life at ‘big school’. They have adapted extremely well to the routines around school. The Kindy students have developed great independence in coming into the school each day, ready to learn. Year 6 leaders initially supported the children’s arrival to school each day, now kindergarten say “I can do it myself.”

Many new friendships have begun and the children and teachers are enjoying the many opportunities to develop these friendships in the classroom and on the playground.
Each morning in Kindergarten begins with play based learning. This involves the students manipulating and learning with a variety of toys and equipment. Play based learning is very important for the child’s literacy, numeracy and language development. It also supports the child’s development of social and emotional skills.
The children have been busy in their Occupational Therapy (OT) rotations, where they are developing their fine motor skills, which will support the child’s writing development.

Kindergarten have been busy developing their early reading and writing skills through the ‘tuning into sounds’ component of the Letters and Sounds phonics programme. This involves hearing and identifying a range of sounds in their world, learning and practising rhymes and alliteration, along with listening to quality literature. This is a crucial part of the program as it supports the child to identify and tune into sounds, which is extremely important as they move into learning phonemes and graphemes, an essential skill for reading and writing.

It has been an extremely busy three weeks in Kindergarten and we can’t wait to see the many friendships develop and what the children will learn over the next few weeks.
