From the Principal's Desk :

Dear Parents and Carers of Good Samaritan,

Another school year is already upon us and our staff are excited to start teaching and learning in 2022. Whilst we begin another school year in a COVID smart way, it won’t deter our school community’s desire to maximise our students’ academic growth. Accompanying this growth is our strong commitment to our Catholic school community’s culture and every student’s growth and development spiritually, personally and socially.

We do this to build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that our students, your children, will take with them for life. No one was born into this world to learn on their own. Rather, very early in life we learn from our parents hence the term ‘first educators’. Then students come to school where ideas, knowledge, concepts and skills are crafted to develop in the mind of the individual.

Recently, I read of a young mother, Kate, who had been diagnosed with a terminal condition. She wrote:

‘When I was really sick and worried about dying too young, I kept trying to picture how much my son would remember. . . .

I thought about him all the time. When do children develop long-term memory? How much am I in there . . . his mischievous mind, his evil laugh. Then one day, my psychologist said something wonderful. He said: “Kate, you’re in there. The foundation is the part that doesn’t show.”’

Whether it is you as parents, or us as teachers, we pour ourselves into the children - building a solid foundation. It should come as an incredible relief to us all. Their only job will be to build on what they have been given, and, even then, even their gifts will be able to be traced back to the creativity, generosity, and foresight of others.

We can give thanks to God that we are, indeed, a group project.

As we travel into this school year together, and always, with Jesus,

Toni Sillis
